Dialysis membranes from Repligen include biotech-grade and standard-grade regenerated cellulose (RC) and biotech-grade cellulose ester (CE) membranes, with GMP customization options, for use in both lab-scale and process-scale operations. 

How STATIC dialysis works

StaNDARD Grade MembraneS

These economical membranes are ideal for applications in which there is a significant size difference between the molecular weights of the species being separated. Applications include sample preparation, desalting, buffer exchange, pH change, protein purification.

Biotech grade membraneS

These premium membranes are ideal for  applications requiring stringent molecular weight cut-offs (MWCOs) and membrane purity. The synthetic membranes are ultra-pure and require no cleaning or pre-treatment. Simply rinse with DI water, apply universal closures and load sample.

Regenerated Cellulose (RC) Membrane

Standard RC Membrane

Standard Grade Regenerated Cellulose (RC) is a clear, flexible and sturdy dialysis membrane with a "looser" molecular selectivity.

  • Wide chemical compatibility
  • Use with dilute strong acids and bases, concentrated weak acids and bases, most alcohols and some mild or dilute organics, including DMSO
  • Standard RC can tolerate pH 2 - 12 and temperature 4 - 121°C. 
  • 4 membrane configurations: Dry rolled tubing, Pre-wetted (ready-to-use) tubing, Pre-treated (cleaned) tubing and Single-layer flat sheets

Biotech RC Membrane

Premium biotech RC dialysis membrane is crafted to yield superior physical tolerances and chemical compatibilities while maintaining high purity.

  • Wide chemical compatibility
  • Tolerates concentrated-weak acids and bases, dilute-strong acids and bases, most alcohols and some mild or dilute organic solvents
  • Exposure to strong polar or organic solvents may damage RC membranes
  • Use with pH 2-12 and temperature 4-60°C.
  • Available in dialysis tubing in 5m/roll tubing and trial size dialysis kits (0.5m)

Cellulose Ester (CE) Membrane

Biotech CE Membrane

Biologically inert and ultra-pure, Biotech CE is available in the largest selection of concise MWCOs (0.1 - 1000 kD) and sizes to provide better molecular separation for desalting, isolating ionic species and macromolecular purifications.

  • Moderate chemical compatibility
  • Generally tolerates weak or dilute acids and bases and mild alcohols with only a slight change to the MWCO
  • More sensitive to harsh conditions and solvents
  • Exposure to most organic solvents may damage CE membranes
  • Use with pH 2-9 and temperature 4-37°C
  • Available in 10m/roll tubing and trial size dialysis kits (1m)

Customized Dialysis Membrane

While standard rolled dialysis tubing may be sufficient for occasional research dialysis, many multi-batch applications require additional routine processing and handling of dialysis membrane to prepare it for a particular use or assembly step. A custom dialysis membrane designed to fit your application saves processing time, minimizes handling, streamlines assembly production and reduces manufacturing costs.

 

Pre-cut Dialysis Membrane

Dialysis tubing can be pre-cut into discs, sheets, strips or squares ready for assembly into assay kits, ready-to-use devices or dialysis systems.

Pre-rolled Dialysis Membrane

Dialysis membrane can be provided as a specified rolled length of 1-ply ribbon. For convenience, dialysis tubing closures can be applied and included within the individual packaging.

Pre-wetted, Pre-treated, or Pre-sterilized Dialysis Membranes

Dry tubing lengths and 1-ply membrane can be pre-wetted or pre-treated to remove heavy metals and sulfides prior to being wet-packaged, ready-to-use for the application. They can also be pre-irradiated by E-beam to minimize the risk of microbial contamination in a dialysis application. Wet membrane products are packaged in DI water without azide preservative prior to irradiation.

Closures

Using proper resealable closures is the only way to ensure proper membrane seal. To prevent leaking or breakage on all membrane types, Repligen offers two classes of dialysis tubing closures.

How they work

 

Spectra/Por® Closures for Standard RC AND BIOTECH RC MembraneS only

Standard Closure

Spectra/Por® Standard Closures aid in buoyancy and vertical orientation of dialysis tubing. They are autoclavable and available in a variety of colors for easy sample identification.

Weighted Closure

Autoclavable, Spectra/Por® Weighted Closures contain an acid-washed, fluorocarbon coated, stainless steel bar. When applied to the bottom of the dialysis tubing, the closure  maintains a vertical orientation of the sample.

Magnetic Closure

Autoclavable Spectra/Por® Magnetic-weighted Closures contain a magnetic fluorocarbon coated stainless steel bar, eliminating the need for conventional stir bars. Applied to the bottom end of the dialysis tubing, this closure provides complete submersion and gentle rotation of the sample on a stir plate.

Paired Standard and Weighted Closures

The ultimate sample buoyancy and vertical orientation can be achieved by applying both a standard and a weighted Spectra/Por® Closure to opposite ends of the same dialysis tubing. The Paired Closures are autoclavable.

Universal Closures FOR BIOTECH CE and BIOTECH RC MEMBRANES ONLY

Specially designed with gentle sealing ridges, Universal Closures are the ideal all-purpose closure that creates a reliable seal with all membrane grades, types and thicknesses. Available in a variety of colors for easy sample identification. For best results, select a pair of closures that has a sealing width 4 to 10 mm longer than the flat width of the dialysis tubing. This assures a proper seal without membrane tearing.
